AT SCENE TRAFFIC CRASH INVESTIGATION
This two-week, 80-hour course will provide the student with the skills necessary to conduct a thorough traffic crash investigation. Upon completion of this course, the student will have a working knowledge of proper photography methods, be able to correctly complete a scene sketch, record roadway and evidence measurements, create accurate scale diagrams, perform detailed vehicle inspections, and properly interpret tire marks and gouges in the roadway. Students will also be instructed on the laws of physics and understand basic mathematical equations used to calculate vehicle speeds. A combination of classroom instruction and outside field activities will ensure students are prepared to properly identify, measure, and interpret traffic crash scene evidence and document the investigation for courtroom presentation.
This course will be offered on the following dates / locations:
January 5th - 16th 2026 - Oakland Community College - Auburn Hills (2900 Featherstone Rd, Auburn Hills, MI 48326)
February 2nd - 13th 2026 - MDOT Lansing Aeronautics (2700 Port Lansing Rd, Lansing, MI 48906)

iptm commercial vehicle crash investigation - level 1
This intensive course will cover the unique characteristics of commercial motor vehicles and the special dynamics at play when one is involved in a collision. Detailed information of the nomenclature and operation of commercial motor vehicles will provide you with a level of competence needed to have an adequate understanding of mechanical components, parts and pieces of the commercial motor vehicle and how they may factor into your investigation. To reinforce the concepts presented, you will conduct “hands-on” exercises and vehicle testing during the course.
Topics Include:
Tractor-trailer nomenclature, brake system configuration and operation, wheels / rims / tires, steering / suspension / frames, coupling devices / fifth wheels, log books, CMV components, COM determination, skid measurement, speed analysis, jack knifing, rollovers, braking dynamics, weight shift
Date / Location:
March 23rd -27th 2026 - Allegan County Sheriff’s Office, 640 River St, Allegan, MI 49010
