Pedestrian Collision Investigation

This pedestrian course discusses the most commonly used pedestrian equations in detail. Those attending the course will learn the strengths and weaknesses of the various equations (over 30) and limitations that have been imposed by the equation’s author. They will also learn what assumptions (preset values) the various authors have made within their equations, and how those assumptions may affect the results of the equations and its applicably to their investigation.

Those attending the course will receive a copy of the “Pedestrian Equations for Excel” program with detailed instructions in its use and how the program operates. This program allows the investigator to calculate all of the pedestrian equations that apply to their collision, and covered in the course, simultaneously while displaying all of the related math in a line-by-line or step-by-step fashion.

Topics Include: Pedestrian Injuries, roadway evidence, vehicle evidence, pedestrian/vehicle collision dynamics, trajectory types, pedestrian conspicuity, bicycle crash investigation, bus off-tracking calculations, pedestrian crash testing and detailed crash test review.

Seating is limited and is expected to fill quickly. Vacancies will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Heavy Truck Reconstruction Techniques

This 40-hour block of training is designed for the advanced technical investigator and/or collision reconstructionist seeking to understand the advanced techniques needed for reconstructing heavy vehicle collisions. Upon conclusion of the class, the student should be able to evaluate a heavy vehicle’s ability to stop, reconstruct a heavy vehicle’s axle weight, calculate a dynamic vehicle rollover threshold, interpret extracted data from Heavy Vehicle Event Data Recorders and telematic systems, and follow the proper procedures for post-crash inspections. Completion of this class will also better prepare the student to be successful in courtroom presentations.

This class is hosted by MSP and is being taught by instructors from the Forensic Training Group

DATE: June 32rd - June 27th, 2025

LOCATION: Northern Michigan University - Jacobetti Complex: 2296 Sugarloaf Ave, Marquette, MI 49855

COST: $800 (includes all classroom materials - lodging and meals are the responsibility of each officer)

REGISTRATION: Must be completed by noon on Monday June 9th, 2025. Enter course code 1127457 in the MI-Train search box

Motorcycle Crash Reconstruction

This 40-hour block of training expands on the collision knowledge of the techniques and applications that are taught in a basic collision investigation course and introduces students to the mental and physical requirements needed for operators to safely operate a motorcycle. This course is for those who wish to build upon the fundamentals with a more advanced concept of mathematical formulas utilized to analyze motorcycle collisions. Some topics that are covered are: analyzing and interpreting motorcycle collision scenes, determining acceleration and decelerations characteristics of motorcycles, nomenclature, gearing positions, tires, analyzing the characteristics and principles of gyroscopic procession, instability and handling characteristics, and validation testing and case analysis.

Traffic Crash Reconstruction (IPTM)

This two-week course is the third in the series, building off the Michigan State Police (MSP) At-Scene and Technical Traffic Crash Investigation courses by assising the student in further understanding vehicle dynamics. There will be a more intense study of time/distance calculations, two-dimensional momentum and impact speed calculations using momentum equations. Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to explain and demonstrate competence in the following areas:

  • Derivation and origin of the commonly used speed formulas

  • Speed of vehicles at impact using conservation of linear momentum

  • Behavior of vehicles in a collision using Newton’s three laws of motion

  • Discussions of commercial vehicle and motorcycle dynamics in collisions

  • The determination of direction of travel, initial contact and position of vehicles on the roadway

This course includes extensive project work to give students first hand experience in crash reconstruction. Each student will be required to diagram and analyze several different crash scenarios as well as complete vector sum analysis of each. This course is presented by the Institute of Police Technology and Management (IPTM), University of North Florida, and is hosted by MSP.

Prerequisites: Must have completed both the MSP At-Scene Traffic Crash Investigation course AND the MSP Technical Traffic Crash Investigation course, or equivalents. Lieutenant Davis must be contacted for approval on equivalent courses. His contact information is listed below.
